NGF=Nerve Growth Factor. You read right!
"One of the most important molecules in the nervous system, nerve growth factor...control...neural transmission in the adult."
(below: ball and stick molecular structure of NGF)

But, what is more interesting is that "The powerful emotions that bowl over new lovers are triggered by a molecule known as nerve growth factor (NGF), according to Pavia University researchers." Story here and also here.
The only problem is that after a year, according to the article, the molecule levels decrease to the levels of a a normal person. Translation: After a year love fades or ends. And no wonder you often hear about nervous break-downs.
This article here states the following:
"When the levels of blood chemicals were measured, it was found that both men and women who had recently fallen in love showed very high levels of NGF - 227 units compared with 123 units recorded in those in long-lasting relationships. The study also found that those who reported the most intense feelings had the highest NGF levels."
Now, that might explain why some people really fall head over heels and some people, well--frankly my dear--I don't give a damn.
